Elder Doyle Hurst: April 17, 2016

Elder Hurst teaches a message on “Gethsemane” as he prepares us for our Communion Service to be held this afternoon.  In Matthew 26: 36-38 is a penetrating look at the feelings of Jesus.  Luke 22: 44 describes Him as “being in agony”.  Jesus faced a different kind of death.  “The cup” (Matthew 26:39) represented the full wrath of God against evil and sin.  Christ was losing His relationship with His Father in order to pay for our sin.  Jesus lived the life that we should have lived, yet He took the penalty that we deserved.

Elder Hurst speaks briefly again this afternoon encouraging us in, “Trusting Our Unseen God.”  Looking at Genesis 1:1, we see that the very first verse of the Bible includes all five categories of everything in existence which were described by scientists in the mid 19th century. “In the beginning (time) God (force) created (action) the heaven (space) and the earth (matter).” People that we have never seen (CEO’s, etc) make decisions that affect our lives daily, yet we trust them.  God, the Creator of the universe, has no needs, so He cannot tire.  God has no sin, so He cannot be corrupted, and He has no age, so we can never lose Him.  You should trust in God because He has a huge investment in you– His Son!!

Elder Hurst begins his message on “Baptism” in Matthew 3: 1,2,8.  In Luke 3:3, Jesus was “…preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.”  If baptism is for the confessed sinner, why did Christ want to be baptized?  An answer can be found in Matthew 3:15, “…for it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness.”  Jesus is including us in His baptism.  The baptism of Jesus is His statement to the world…‘Let Me pay!’  When we get baptized, we are telling the world…‘I’m with Him!’
